Transfer to senior schools 

It is our expectation that all children who join City Junior School in Year 3, or via occasional places, will transfer to the senior schools – City of London School and City of London School for Girls – to continue their education.

Pupils at the junior school do not take part in the 11+ process. Removing the need for entrance exam preparation allows the curriculum to remain broad and rich, enabling teachers to focus on developing skills and learning dispositions. This approach ensures that pupils start Year 7 confident, relaxed, and ready for their next challenge. Regular assessments, both summative and formative, give teachers a clear picture of each child’s progress throughout their time at CJS.

Based on sustained progress and discussions with the senior schools, parents of Year 5 pupils receive a letter of recommendation from the Head at the end of spring term confirming that, subject to continued academic progress, an offer of a place will be made at the respective senior school.

Occasionally, it may become clear that the relevant senior school is not the best place for a child to continue their education, as it is unlikely they would thrive there. In such cases, conversations and interventions begin well in advance so that parents have time to explore alternative options, with advice and support from the school throughout the process.

The final decision regarding transfer rests with the Heads of the senior schools.

Travel to school 

The school is centrally located, minutes from Chancery Lane underground and many bus routes, and we encourage the use of public transport. There are bike and scooter racks available. There are currently two school bus routes, running from Finchley and Kilburn. We may add additional routes in the future, should there be sufficient demand from families living in other parts of London.

Wraparound care 

We operate a breakfast club from 7.30am, and an after school club until 6.15pm every day during term time. 

School uniform 

Children wear an affordable, sustainable and gender-neutral uniform, which is designed with comfort and simplicity in mind. There is a mix and match approach to our uniform, and the children always have with them a top layer featuring the school logo. This is a regulation sweatshirt, jumper, cardigan or long-sleeved polo shirt.

School lunches 

Children eat lunch in the Hall at Gray’s Inn. All dietary requirements can be catered for, and the children sit with pupils from other year groups and members of staff. Lunchtime lasts one hour, and the children split their time equally between eating and playing outside.
