City Junior School is committed to enabling access to the school for those for whom its education will be most transformational.

Bursaries

A bursary is a financial support package for academically gifted pupils who would not ordinarily be able to afford independent school fees. Each year we offer a small number of means tested bursaries to assist the parents of academically bright pupils who otherwise could not consider private education. Bursaries are competitive, with demand exceeding the resources available to finance all applications.

Bursaries are available to pupils joining us in Year 3 (7+) and are awarded on the basis of performance in the academic entrance examinations and financial means testing of both parents’ income and assets. Generally, unless there is a significant change in circumstances mid-way through a pupil's time at the school, bursaries are not available outside this entry point.

Please also note that we cannot consider applications for bursaries when offering occasional places, nor from overseas pupils or pupils of families who are not both resident in the U.K. and U.K. nationals / have the right to permanent U.K. residence. We also ask that bursary pupils are permanently resident within London or easy, daily commuter distance into the school.

Eligibility criteria

Bursaries at City Junior School are focussed on families in greatest financial need and are designed to cover all of a pupil’s tuition fees (100% bursaries) as well as ancillary needs. Bursaries are always subject to the school’s standard means testing, undertaken by the in-house bursary team.

While the criteria for bursaries depends on a range of financial variables, some illustrative examples of the financial and other criteria for support are listed below.

A family with two children on a joint after-tax income of £55,000 per annum or less, with limited assets, would be eligible to be considered for a full bursary equivalent to 100% of fees.
Applicants with a six figure income, a large house, second homes, or savings and investments exceeding the equivalent of 2 ½ years of school fees are unlikely to meet the criteria for a bursary.
It is unlikely that a bursary will be made available to a pupil currently attending an independent school, unless they receive a means-tested bursary to attend this school.

What is included

Those pupils who receive full fee remission (100% Bursary) are also eligible for a grant to help cover some of the cost of school uniform and travel to and from school. The full list of benefits is detailed below:

Curriculum-based compulsory school trips
A contribution towards pupil’s public transport to and from the school and home, of up to £250 each term
Uniform (a one-off payment upon joining the school for up to £250)
Exam entry fees (if applicable)

All bursary places are subject to successful completion of the academic entrance requirements and interviews, and the pupil’s continued hard work, attendance and good behaviour throughout their time at the school. The generosity of benefactors, other parents, the City of London Corporation, and other donors drive our bursary scheme, and therefore, where they are selected for bursaries from certain donors, pupils will be expected to stay connected with those donors and give feedback on their progress. Parents will also be asked to provide an annual update to their financial situation (usually during the summer term) and continued bursarial support is dependent on the outcome of this annual review.

Applying for a bursary

Step 1: Registration
When registering, please indicate on the registration form that you would like your child to be considered for a bursary. We will waive the £160 registration fee for any UK families in receipt of social benefits (excluding child benefit). Please contact us before completing the registration form.

Step 2: Complete bursary application form
You will be sent an online bursary application form shortly before our first entrance assessments. Please note that if you do not complete this application at this point, we will not be able to consider your child for a bursary at a later date.

Step 3: Submit supporting documents if eligible
If your child is successful in the first assessment and is invited back for fthe second stage of our assessment process, you will be notified of the outcome of your initial bursary assessment. If you are deemed eligible, at this point you will be asked to upload all the necessary supporting documents.

Step 4: Home visit
After the further assessments and interview, some families under consideration for a bursary will receive home visits from members of the finance and pastoral teams.

Step 5: Transition meeting
There will be bursary transition meetings in the summer term for students who are joining in September with key pastoral staff and their families.

Hannah Gold (author) has written three books, The Lost Whale, The Last Bear and Finding Bear (which came out yesterday!). On Wednesday, she came to visit us! Everyone was very excited, we couldn’t wait to meet her and get our books signed! It started off with Hannah telling us about the book, where it was set, who were the characters and a run through of the plot. The children enjoyed a river cruise before hopping on board the London Eye. They enjoyed learning more about the many landmarks in the city. Aahaan said: "I loved it when I was at the top of the London Eye and I could see the hospital where I was born."
