A week of celebrations for World Book Day

Highlights included a visit from childrens' author Rachel Chivers Khoo, who spoke to years 3 and 4 about her journey to becoming an author, before children had the opportunity to ask any burning questions about the processes of story-writing.
Rachel then worked with year 5 on some hands-on creative writing workshops, considering the effect of writing from different perspectives, using the 1st or 3rd person,
A group of keen year 6 readers visited CLS to attend a talk by fiction writer Sam Sedgeman, whose stories are infused with his protagonists' adventuring appetite and lust for scientific discovery. The talk was rich in inspiration for the budding young writers among us.
Undoubtedly the most prestigious event was the costume parade! Students and staff dressed as their favourite book characters, with Ms Thompson even dressed as a giraffe!
All children also had the opportunity to buy a book from The Children's Bookshop who made a special visit to CJS, setting up shop in the library, complete with a wonderful array of childrens' literature to choose from. What a treat! Throughout the day, lessons were themed to a range of book-related activities, from quizzes, book recommendations, and even a World Book Day rap!

"On Thursday, it was World Book Day and Ms Thompson was a giant inflatable giraffe! We had a whole school parade and it was so fun! Everyone was celebrating and admiring people's costumes. Everyone's costumes were so stylish with less Harry Potter this year!"
"World Book Day was so fun! We got to dress up as a character of our choice and we focused on our characters intently. I can't wait for WBD 2026!"
"It was so fun! I liked dressing up and parading through the school"
"World book day was super exciting, I loved dressing up and there were loads of books at the book shop to choose from. I bought two books and they were really interesting!"

Gray’s Inn Singers have been crowned UK champions at Barnardo’s National Choir Competition as well as winning at The Watford Festival 2026
The Gray’s Inn Singers from City Junior School have also won the Grand Prize for Musical Excellence at the Barnardo’s National Choir Competition. The choir performed at Birmingham Symphony Hall on Tuesday 3 March, having been selected as one of 16 outstanding finalists in the Junior Choir category. Their programme featured a captivating performance of Sakura, a traditional Japanese song arranged by Michael Neaum, followed by Larysa Kuzmenko’s dramatic and evocative Winds, which portrays the gathering intensity of a storm. This achievement is a testament to the children’s hard work, dedication, and passion for singing, and we are incredibly proud of them.…
