City of London Corporation Schools Chess Tournament 2026
All news
On Wednesday 25 March, a small team of CJS chess players travelled to the Guildhall to take part in the Corporation Schools Chess Tournament. The day began with an excellent teaching session led by a Chess in Schools and Communities teacher, giving the children the opportunity to develop their skills before putting them into practice with some friendly games against one another.
After lunch, the tournament got underway. Each child played six games, with their scores determining their next group of opponents. With only four primary schools among the ten schools competing, our chess players faced some strong and, in many cases, much older opponents. However, they remained calm and focused throughout, demonstrating impressive confidence, determination and sportsmanship.
The results were fantastic. Six members of the team scored an impressive 13 points, earning silver medals, while another team member secured a bronze medal. Strong performances across the whole team saw CJS crowned Primary School Cup winners!
The children thoroughly enjoyed the experience and were delighted with their achievement:
“I thought the day was amazing!”
“It was really fun to play the chess matches and I think all of our team did really well. I'm really grateful that we won!”
“It was an amazing experience!”
“I'm happy that I was one of the top scorers!”
“I beat a Year 9 and a Year 7 student! I'm happy that as a team we all worked together to win a trophy.”
“I really enjoyed playing chess, as I had a challenge and I managed to beat a Year 12!”
“It was a very nice tournament and I am very grateful for everyone's teamwork, so we could win first place in the primary schools!”
“The tournament was very fun and I learnt lots of new things about chess. I'm very happy that we won!”
“This is the best chess tournament I've ever been in!”
A huge well done to the whole team for their outstanding achievement and for representing CJS with such focus, confidence and team spirit.
