In the classroom with Year 4

Year 4 have enjoyed another busy and varied week, featuring clay, area and perimeter, poetry and the Ancient Greeks!

In Maths, pupils have finished their learning on a module on area and perimeter and the children completed some exciting problem-solving tasks using these two skills. In English, children have been working on different styles of writing: exploring writing their own poetry, and now working on newspaper reports, employing a different style, tone and structure to gather and present information.

Science has involved plunging into the wonderful world of teeth! In order to fully envisage the structure of teeth, pupils made models of the jaw using salt dough. In Humanities, we are approaching the last task of the term, working on oracy skills to deliver a presentation on the legacy of the Ancient Greeks. 

In DT lessons, several CLSG A-level students joined Year 4 classes for a session working on forces and momentum, in Ferris wheel models and slingshot cars. The pupils then made their own sling shot cars out of lolly sticks, cardboard, and elastic bands. It was an exciting way to learn through models and experimentation, with the support of the CLSG A-level DT students.

"I really enjoyed doing poetry because I like how you can express your feelings and emotions. I used lots of descriptive language." 

"I really enjoyed our Maths unit on Area and Perimeter because I had to think carefully to solve complex problems." 

"Making salt dough teeth was tricky to make them look accurate but it was fun to learn about the different types of teeth." 

“I like learning about all the different types of teeth. Last week we made a model of our teeth using salt dough. We could choose between the top and the bottom set of teeth, we used a mirror to help us mould the teeth correctly'. 

“I liked learning about area and perimeter in Maths. We are learning to solve the perimeter by adding up all the side lengths and finding the area of compound shapes.”
