Inside the academic life of Year 5 this week

It's been a busy week for Year 5 who have explored Shakespeare's work in English, the construction of bridges in DT, push and pull forces in Science, alongside participating in the election process for Pupil Parliament MPs.

English lessons this week have involved an exploration of Shakespeare’s work, as pupils have spent time analyzing the unique structure and form of his plays. We hope it has given the children a taste for the playwright’s seminal work.  

Science lessons have taken an interactive approach to learning about push and pull forces. Through experiments and observations, they are developing a deeper understanding of how forces work in the world around them. Design Technology lessons also involved practical and creative thinking, using spaghetti and sellotape in a group to construct a truss bridge model.  

A highlight of the week has been the process of electing class MPs for Pupil Parliament. Year 5 delivered thoughtful and inspiring speeches as to why they should be voted into parliament as an MP. The process of applying to be an MP consolidated both leadership skills alongside the importance of considering the interests and needs of a group, as the MP’s job is to, as an individual in parliament, voice the concerns of the group body of their class. It was wonderful to see so many confident and enthusiastic applicants, and for the children to wholeheartedly take on board the voting and election process.
