Maths Detectives at the BFI
All news
Year 5 enjoyed an exciting visit to the BFI Southbank to take part in the Maths in the Movies event. During the interactive workshop, the children became mathematical detectives, solving a range of film-themed challenges inspired by well-known films including Harry Potter, Finding Nemo and Spider-Man.
The children used a variety of mathematical skills throughout the session, including problem solving, reading timetables, interpreting coordinates and applying their knowledge of measurement. Working together, they used these skills to help solve the mystery of Nemo’s disappearance.
The workshop was a fantastic opportunity to see how mathematics can be applied in creative and unexpected ways, while also encouraging teamwork, discussion and logical thinking.
The children particularly enjoyed combining maths with film clips and working together to debate and solve the challenges:
“The trip to the BFI was very interesting and it was fun as the teacher merged maths and watching funny clips together. It was probably the best maths lesson we ever had.”
“The BFI was very fun. I enjoyed debating the answers with my friends while enjoying movie clips.”
“The maths was really fun and I loved how it took us through lots of different films.”
It was a fantastic day of learning, laughter and problem solving, and a brilliant reminder that maths can be found everywhere — even at the movies!
