The annual CJS Year 3 & 4 Winter Spectacular took place this week, and was a true celebration of our values of musicality, festive joy and community.
The Junior Strings opened the concert with a delightful performance of Hydom, Hydom, a Czech carol that set a warm, festive tone. Their rendition of the Welsh tune Deck the Hall showcased their skilful synchronisation and joyful energy, capturing the holiday spirit beautifully.
Next, the Junior Percussion Ensemble impressed with Sizalelwe Indonana (For Unto Us a Child is Born). The rhythmic precision and enthusiasm of the young percussionists made this piece a standout, evoking a sense of tradition and community.
The Year 3 students brought a playful charm to Reindeer on the Roof, with their spirited singing and expressive delivery. This was followed by Year 4, who gave a jazzy and dynamic performance of ‘Zat You, Santa Claus?' Their confident vocals and captivating choreography brought smiles all around.
The Junior Guitar Ensemble added a gentle, melodic touch with Ring Little Bells. Their harmonious playing demonstrated impressive coordination and a strong musical foundation.
The Junior Voices delivered two contrasting pieces: Dry Bones, an upbeat and lively traditional spiritual, and Christmas Cacophony, a whimsical, layered piece that showcased their versatility and clear diction.
The Junior Band brought the concert to life with instrumental versions of Deck the Halls and We Three Kings. Their polished and energetic performance highlighted their technical proficiency and teamwork.
The CJS Singers captivated the audience with their soulful interpretations of Wade in the Water and Joshua Fit the Battle of Joshua, both traditional spirituals, as well as the festive Holly and Mistletoe. Their vocal precision and emotive delivery were remarkable, and we congratulate our two soloists, Barney and Anushka, for their beautiful singing.
For a grand finale, the whole Year 3 & 4 Phase presented a vibrant rendition of A Holly Jolly Christmas. Their collective enthusiasm and festive spirit resonated with the audience, leaving everyone in high spirits.
The communal songs, led by Mr Richmond were a heart-warming conclusion. The Carol Medley, Dreidel, O Chanukah and 12 Days of Christmas invited participation from all, filling St Andrew's Church with a sense of unity and joy.
Overall, the concert was a delightful celebration of young talent, blending tradition, festivity, and creativity. Each performance reflected the dedication and hard work of both students and staff, making it a memorable evening for all in attendance.

Gray’s Inn Singers have been crowned UK champions at Barnardo’s National Choir Competition as well as winning at The Watford Festival 2026
The Gray’s Inn Singers from City Junior School have also won the Grand Prize for Musical Excellence at the Barnardo’s National Choir Competition. The choir performed at Birmingham Symphony Hall on Tuesday 3 March, having been selected as one of 16 outstanding finalists in the Junior Choir category. Their programme featured a captivating performance of Sakura, a traditional Japanese song arranged by Michael Neaum, followed by Larysa Kuzmenko’s dramatic and evocative Winds, which portrays the gathering intensity of a storm. This achievement is a testament to the children’s hard work, dedication, and passion for singing, and we are incredibly proud of them.…
