Year 3 head off on a camping adventure

Year 3 headed off into Hertfordshire for an adventure in the wilderness, ready to challenge their outdoor abilities with scavenger hunts, shelter and fire-building, and nature investigations.

Rootd outdoor adventure centre hosted our group with their expert guides. The scavenger hunt kicked off the day, working in teams to collect natural materials which they later used to build their very own bug hotels.

After lunch, children spent time identifying different tree species, with the opportunity to taste nettles and sorrel. Others took part in a Survivors Bushcraft workshop, learning essential outdoor skills, including shelter and fire-building, perfect for a toasting a marshmallow.

Later in the day, children enjoyed a break, playing in the open fields, before the evenings event, "Rootd's Got Talent". Children showed off their comedy skills and magic tricks whilst sipping hot chocolate around the campfire. 

In the childrens' words:

"In the early morning of Tuesday we arrived at school and placed our bags inside the hall, desperately waiting for the coach. As soon as the coach arrived we knew we were set for an exciting adventure into the wilderness. After a short hour which felt like forever we stepped foot at our destination, Rootd! Where we were greeted with beaming smiles from the friendly instructors and notified of our dorms. Eagerly we ran to place our bags away and commence with our first activity of the day, our Scavanger hunt."

"In the afternoon we spilt up and some of us did Explorers but others did Survivor Bushcraft, where we made shelters out of long strings and a water proof cover, using trees to support us. Then we roasted marshmallows and practiced lighting fire using flint and steel and cotton wool.”

“Lastly, we ended the night with a campfire, and were given delicious hot chocolate and watched some fun magic tricks and singing and brushed our teeth and went to sleep. On Wednesday morning, we excitedly woke up and tidied our bags up. Everybody was starving so we headed to the breakfast hall. We gleefully devoured our delicious breakfast, pain au chocolat, yoghurt and cereal!
