Year 4 Discover the Wonders of Kew Gardens
All news
Year 4 spent an inspiring day immersed in the world of plants during our visit to Kew Gardens on Friday, an experience that perfectly complemented our current humanities learning about rainforests. From the moment the children arrived, they were surrounded by unfamiliar sights, sounds and ideas that sparked curiosity and thoughtful discussion.
During a hands-on session called Rainforests: People and Plants, pupils were challenged to think creatively and practically about life in a rainforest environment. Faced with a survival scenario, they explored how different plants could be used to support human needs, particularly when food, shelter and health were at risk. Moving through the glasshouses, the children worked collaboratively to uncover the remarkable ways plants can support communities around the world.
The visit also encouraged pupils to make connections between rainforest plants and everyday life in the UK. Through guided exploration and discussion, they learned how products such as medicines, materials and foods often have their origins in these biodiverse environments, prompting thoughtful conversations about conservation and responsibility.
Later in the day, the children experienced the sheer scale of rainforest habitats as they explored the Palm House from above, gaining a new perspective on its layered structure. This was followed by a calm and reflective session in the Princess of Wales Conservatory, where pupils observed and sketched a wide range of tropical plants. These sketches are now being used as creative starting points for our DT learning this term, focused on designing pneumatic toys with a rainforest theme.
The children represented the school superbly throughout the day, demonstrating excellent manners, enthusiasm and a genuine love of learning. Staff were particularly impressed by the depth of the questions asked and the teamwork shown. We are very grateful to our parent helpers for their time and support, which helped make the visit both enjoyable and successful for everyone involved.
