Year 4 visit Kew Gardens

Year 4 enjoyed a day at Kew Gardens to enrich their learning around 'Rainforests', their Humanities topic for the term.

The highlight of the day was an exciting workshop titled Rainforests: People and Plants, where children had to imagine themselves stranded deep in the rainforest – no food, no shelter, and some of their group feeling poorly. With the guidance of Kew Gardens' experts, the children explored the lush greenhouses and discovered the multiple ways rainforest plants can help people survive.

From providing medicine, food, building materials and more, the children investigated how people in rainforest communities – and even here in the UK – rely on plants in our everyday lives. It was a brilliant opportunity to think about the choices we make and the impact those choices have on these precious environments.

Children climbed the high walkway in Palm House to explore the towering layers of the rainforest, then headed to the Princess of Wales Conservatory to sketch some extraordinary tropical plants. These drawings are now inspiring our DT project this term: creating rainforest-themed pneumatic toys.

A wonderful day out for CJS pupils, filled with exploration and enrichment.
