Year 4 take part in a Roman Workshop at Guildhall

Hidden for centuries beneath the city streets, the original circular walls of the Roman Amphitheatre were rediscovered by archaeologists in 1988 during construction of the gallery. Today, visitors can step inside these remarkable ruins, once the stage for wild animal fights, public executions, and gladiatorial combat.

Our pupils had the unique opportunity to explore this real archaeological site alongside a trained archaeologist. They learned about the discovery of the Amphitheatre, the layout of Roman London, and the role this impressive structure played nearly 2,000 years ago. The session offered a fascinating glimpse into life in Roman Britain and sparked plenty of curiosity and excitement.

The highlight of the day? A thrilling gladiator showdown! Two brave “gladiators” from each class battled under the watchful eyes of their classmates, presided over by an Emperor and Empress chosen from among the pupils. It was a memorable finale to an inspiring visit.
