Year 5 enjoy a visit to the Globe Theatre

This week, Year 5 visited the Globe theatre as part of their History and English learning. 

This trip was a wonderful opportunity to bring to life English topics of play-writing and to further the girls' historical understanding of Elizabethan England. A building brimming with history and stories to be told, pupils enjoyed an architectural and historical tour of the theatre led by our designated theatre guide, which prompted many questions. Later on, the girls participated in a drama workshop examining individual lines from a variety of Shakespeare's plays, using them as stimuli for discussion and the pupils’ own re-enactments of some scenes.  

In the pupils’ own words:  

"Did you know the Globe Theatre is a twenty sided polygon, an 'icosagon'? This is just one of the fun facts we learned on our school trip to the Globe. Ever wonder why the theatre is roofless? I will let you ponder that question. Overall, it was a stimulating experience and I remember feeling a sense of awe when I first stepped into the historic theatre."  

"Yesterday, we went to the Globe Theatre. Firstly, we met our guide called Bea and she told us all about the Southbank and about the origin and popularity of the theatre. Afterwards, we saw the replica of the theatre and how the seating was arranged. At the end, we attended a workshop and played a variety of games such as Grandmother's footsteps (Shakespeare style!) and we 'glossed' a scene from Macbeth."
