Year 5 visit to the Queen’s Gallery

Last Friday, Year 5 visited the 'Holbein at the Tudor Court' exhibition at the Queen’s Gallery.
In preparation, Year 5 girls painted pages in their sketchbooks with washes of watercolour. This was a method often used by Holbein to prepare his sheets with a mid-tone effect, permitting him to work more delicately with light highlights and shadows in his portraiture. The girls generated sensitive sketches from close observations of Holbein’s drawings, alongside a selection of paintings by his contemporaries. The portraits of Catherine of Aragon’s parents painted by an unknown artist from the Spanish school prompted much discussion. It was a wonderful opportunity for our pupils to observe Holbein’s exquisite works on paper and to respond visually and verbally to his work.

Gray’s Inn Singers have been crowned UK champions at Barnardo’s National Choir Competition as well as winning at The Watford Festival 2026
The Gray’s Inn Singers from City Junior School have also won the Grand Prize for Musical Excellence at the Barnardo’s National Choir Competition. The choir performed at Birmingham Symphony Hall on Tuesday 3 March, having been selected as one of 16 outstanding finalists in the Junior Choir category. Their programme featured a captivating performance of Sakura, a traditional Japanese song arranged by Michael Neaum, followed by Larysa Kuzmenko’s dramatic and evocative Winds, which portrays the gathering intensity of a storm. This achievement is a testament to the children’s hard work, dedication, and passion for singing, and we are incredibly proud of them.…
