Year 6 wrap up their Autumn term of learning

Year 6 wrap up a busy Autumn term of learning with a range of activities, featuring gymnastics competitions, newspaper reports, 2D and 3D shapes, and thinking about 'Empire' through Christmas puddings.

Our final English unit of the year centred on producing a newspaper report inspired by the story of 'The Red Headed League'. Pupils have developed their journalistic prowess, taking diligent notes as they interviewed witnesses and carefully considering the best headlines for their pieces.

Maths lessons have involved the exploration of 2D and 3D shapes. Pupils have taken on board topic-specific vocabulary and have practiced categorising shapes according to their properties, creating nets for 3D shapes and calculating the area and perimeter of compound shapes.

The winter holidays will mean the end of our Humanities topic centred on 'The British Empire'. This week, pupils learned all about 6-figure grid references and took part in a Treasure Hunt using an Ordnance Survey map of our local area. Lessons even explored how the elements of a traditional Christmas pudding are linked to the Empire.

Another highlight was the Year 6 gymnastics squad competing in a local competition which they successfully won, qualifying them for a National competition in May.
